Our Team

The Nonprofit Brain Trust is comprised of highly skilled, seasoned development professionals who have extensive experience working with nonprofit organizations, charitable institutions, foundations and for-profit corporations.

Kim Appleby is Managing Partner and co-founder of The Nonprofit Brain Trust. She works with progressive nonprofit, political and business organizations seeking strategic marketing and planning, business development, and/or resource development services.   Kim counsels Nonprofit Brain Trust clients in the areas of strategic planning, board development, resource and fund development strategies, foundation and major donor solicitation programs, branding, marketing/communications and corporate-nonprofit partnerships.  She is responsible for the firm’s client services operations and business development activities.

Tammy Booth is Vice President/Virtual Services Director. She has more than 25 years of experience in a variety of key administrative roles within the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Tammy is founder and principal of Administrative Intelligence, a professional service firm providing high-level “virtual” assistants to nonprofits and corporations. She provides consulting in the areas of management, operations and administration, and supervises the virtual services provided by The Nonprofit Brain Trust.

Jeffrey Catania, Ph.D., co-founder of The Nonprofit Brain Trust, has more than 35 years of executive level experience in the areas of resource development, campaign design and grantsmanship. He has directed fund development efforts for nonprofits that have raised more than $150 million through a variety of development strategies, including capital and major gift campaigns, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving and negotiated endowment gifts.

Susan Franklin is co-founder and President Emeritus of The Nonprofit Brain Trust. She has more than 30 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including senior management positions in development, board service and foundation governance. Susan consults with nonprofits in the areas of strategic planning, board and fund development. She serves as Board Chair of The Youth Arts Collective and is Director Emeritus of Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.


Doug Levinson is Senior Strategist for The Nonprofit Brain Trust. He has more than 25 years of experience as a management consultant specializing in technology, business and strategic planning, operations, marketing and finance. His success with start-up, high growth and turn-around firms provides nonprofits with a unique approach to management and strategic planning issues. Doug serves on various for-profit and nonprofit boards and is on the faculty of UCLA’s Graduate School of Management.
